The low fat diet is based on the following principles:

  • -Certain fats can have a negative effect on your cholesterol levels, and increase your risk of heart disease2.

How Does The Low Fat Diet Work?

The low fat diet is based on the following principles:

Of all the macronutrients, fat is the most energy dense. Each gram of fat provides nearly twice as many calories as protein or fat. Therefore, by reducing fat intake, can drastically reduce calories you consume.1

Certain types of fat can have a negative effect on your cholesterol levels, and increase the risk of heart disease2

Know your fats

Not all fats are bad, and we’ll now look into the main types of fats you’ll encounter and their effects on your health. These include:

Trans Fats
These are typically found in hydrogenated vegetable oils, which are often found in processed foods, and commercially made biscuits and pastries. These have been found to raise LDL (bad cholesterol).

Saturated Fats
These are typically found in meat, dairy and some processed foods. Saturated fats have been found to raise HDL (good cholesterol) and LDL (bad cholesterol).

Unsaturated Fats
These are divided into three kinds:
-Poly-unsaturated fats found in sunflower and corn oil
-Mono-unsaturated fats found in olive oil and rapeseed oil
-Omega 3 fatty acids found in oily fish, and some plant foods

Unsaturated fats are healthy fats which have been linked to lower LDL (bad cholesterol) and higher HDL (good cholesterol), and therefore could be beneficial against heart disease.

Is the Low Fat diet healthy?

Not all low fat diets are the same, and in the last 30 years the concept has evolved to allow healthy fats which are essential for optimal health. For example, our body requires some fat for healthy cell function, Omega 3 and Omega 6 for healthy skin and health, as well as vitamins A, D, E and K which tend to be found in high fat foods.

In order for a low fat diet to be healthy, it must therefore include healthy fats combined with healthy carbohydrate and protein food sources.

Is the Low Fat diet for you?

Following a fat restricted diet can bring some health benefits, help reduce your calorie intake, and contribute to a lower cholesterol level, which has been associated to heart disease.2

But low fat diets has some limitations, for example:

Not all fats are bad, for example unsaturated fats have been found to help lower cholesterol, and be beneficial to your overall health2

Extremely low fat diets tend to taste bland, and therefore could make your diet unsustainable

Low fat diets might not lead to weight loss, and in recent studies lower fat diets rated worse than their higher fat counterparts.4

Check your labels: Low fat products tend to contain artificial ingredients which cause more damage than the fat they look to replace

But combined with sound nutritional judgement, you will benefit from making some of the changes suggested in this diet.

How does Fitium compare?

Fitium takes a similar view with regards to harmful fats, cutting these from it’s diet plans. But fitium incorporates healthy fats which are essential for optimal health and weight loss.
